The individual known as the Flag Day Killer has killed at least one person on each of the 171 days of the current year, including June 14, according to data released Friday by the Commonwealth Bureau of Criminal Statistics. Officials described the finding as having complicated the killer's pseudonym, the killer's apparent motive, and the methodology by which the Bureau has counted the killer's victims since 2019. The release was 340 pages long. Bureau staff confirmed that no one has requested a printed copy.

The killer was named by the Gnu Police Department's contracted branding vendor after a single homicide on June 14, 2019. Under guidelines adopted that year, only deaths occurring on Flag Day were attributed to the Flag Day Killer. Killings on the other 364 days that matched the same method, location pattern, and handwritten note were filed under the category "Unaffiliated, Recurring." That category became the island's leading cause of death in 2021. This newspaper reported on the category's growth in four consecutive annual summaries, each published on June 15.

Bureau spokesperson Dale Prewitt said the agency was "aware of the tension" between the killer's name and the killer's schedule but cautioned against what he called "premature reattribution."

"We have a killer who is killing every day, and we have a name that says otherwise. Our mandate is to count the name. If we start counting the killer, we lose year-over-year comparability, and then frankly nobody knows anything."

Prewitt said a working group would consider renaming options, including "the Daily Killer," "the Flag Day and Surrounding Days Killer,", keeping the existing name with an asterisk, making every day Flag Day, or designing an unpronouncable symbol the Flag Killer will henceforth be known as. The working group is scheduled to convene on June 14 of next year, which Prewitt described as "thematically appropriate." Under the methodology still in effect, the Flag Day Killer's official total for the year stands at one. The Bureau noted in a footnote that this represents a 0% change from last year and called the figure "stable."
