Elon Musk introduced the People Mover — capable of launching a seated adult approximately 1.4 miles in 0.3 seconds — at a press event in Gnu Harbor on Wednesday, describing the transit system as "the most important thing to happen to human movement since legs." The device, installed overnight on the eastern edge of the harbor without a permit, was demonstrated once before the event concluded. The demonstration passenger was not present at the press conference.
Musk, who has described New Newmanton as "a compelling proof-of-concept environment," said the People Mover would "completely solve" the island's commuting problem, which he characterized as "a software issue, fundamentally." He set a target of 100% successful passenger delivery by the end of 2028 and said the platform would be "open source in the ways that matter." He did not specify the current success rate, saying only that "iteration is part of the process."
A spokesperson for Consolidated Finality Partners LLC, the entity in advanced discussions with the commonwealth to purchase and comprehensively destroy New Newmanton, said the company was "watching the People Mover rollout with interest" and that the technology was "not inconsistent with our timeline."
